I first heard about Dorcas Smucker on Facebook. I had been blogging since in my early 20’s and was fascinated to read the blog of someone other than my peers. Eventually I would hear others saying things like, “Did you read what Dorcas Smucker from Oregon wrote?” She was one famous Mennonite woman.
She grew up Amish and often describes stories about her past and culture that are interesting and for me, even though I didn’t grow up Amish, (originally Weaverland Conference Mennonite in Lancaster) I all to easily crack a knowing grin or chuckle at her stories because they pack so much familiarity to my upbringing.
Putting her past into written words invokes me as a fellow writer to want to discover more about my family ancestors and their individual stories that will go lost unless they are uncovered. Dorcas tells stories for the distant to the not so distant past and wraps each tale up enlightening truths, encouraging and inspiring us all.
Besides blogging she is the author of 5 other books and now her newest – Fragment Whiffs of Joy, which, like her style, is packed full of amusing short stories.
She’s a witty writer, unfolding the day-to-day in such a way that glues your eyeballs to the pages and in the end has you muttering, me too! or, I so get this! or, that’s how you put words to it!
My some of my favorite scenes in this book forever etched in my mind include:
- when her Amish grandma and aunt jumping off a moving train
- the bush she thought was dying outside her window
- and the episode of her two boys and a WD-40 can igniting in their bedroom
In this book, Dorcas shares simple wisdom and uncovers meaning in the ordinary that entices you to be watching for the humor and joy tucked into your day that you didn’t realize was there all along.
With this book, Dorcas is doing a blog tour and I happily joined the band wagon of bloggers!

I love Dorcas’ writings too, Often I too exclaim “oh that’s how it is.” or “oh yes exactly” after reading a certain line. What brings me joy – Reading a good book and little children, who are also witty at times.

I find joy in having a clean house and nice food prepared for the Sabbath, remembering when my children were young (they’re all adults now), playing and cuddling with my beloved dog (no grandkids yet!) and appreciating the gorgeousness of Alaska where I am so blessed to live. I formerly lived in Oregon and even met Dorcas Smucker once! I love all of her books and can’t wait to read the new one.

When my three year old says “tell me a story”. But what he really means is, read a Bible story and ask me some questions. He is nine years younger than his four siblings and he brings me great joy!
Dorcas is one of my favorite authors; I would love to win her book.

As far as what’s bringing me joy, last night I went to an international food festival at a local university. It was so neat to learn about other cultures and their traditions.
